Luiz Amaral is an Assistant Professor in Hispanic Linguistics at the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures. He works with second language acquisition, computer-assisted language learning, and native Brazilian languages. He is the co-author of TAGARELA, an ICALL web-based system that uses natural language processing to provide more detailed feedback to Portuguese language learners. He is currently working with Patricia Gubitosi on the development of a corpus for bilingual and minority speakers, and has plans to incorporate samples from his work with native Brazilian populations. He is also one of the directors of The UMass Language Acquisition Research Center. His more theoretical work focuses on the representation of bilingual grammars with a specific focus on adult second language speakers.
